The Best Outdoor Activities in Utah (By Season)
Utah's outdoor recreation economy hit a record $9.75 billion in 2024, and when you see what's available here, you'll understand why. From world-class skiing to red rock hiking, Utah offers year-round adventure that few states can match.
Winter (December - March): Powder days and snow adventures
Winter is when Utah truly shines. The state's famous "Greatest Snow on Earth" isn't marketing hyperbole. The dry, light powder that falls on the Wasatch Mountains is genuinely world-class. Major resorts include Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Park City Mountain, Deer Valley, and Powder Mountain.
Beyond skiing and snowboarding, winter offers snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating at outdoor rinks, and fat tire biking on groomed trails.
Spring (April - June): Canyon blooms and trail openings
Spring is the transition season, and it's beautiful. Lower-elevation trails open up, wildflowers begin blooming, and the weather is perfect for hiking and biking. This is also prime season for visiting Utah's national parks, when temperatures are comfortable and crowds are lighter than summer.
Summer (July - September): Peak adventure season
Summer is when Utah goes all-out. Hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and camping are all at their peak. The mountain trails above 8,000 feet offer cooler temperatures and stunning alpine scenery, while southern Utah's red rock country provides a completely different landscape to explore.
Don't miss the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, and the Timpanogos Cave National Monument.
Fall (October - November): Golden trails and crisp air
Fall might be Utah's most beautiful season. The mountain canyons explode with golden aspens and red maples, creating some of the most photogenic landscapes in the country. The weather is cool and crisp, perfect for hiking without the summer heat.
Alpine Loop, Provo Canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Little Cottonwood Canyon are all spectacular during peak foliage (typically mid-September to mid-October).
Pickleball: Utah's year-round sport
One activity that doesn't depend on seasons is pickleball. Courts are available year-round, and the community is growing fast. Whether you're a beginner or competitive player, there are leagues, clinics, and drop-in sessions across every Utah city. For lessons and community events, check out Pickle Up Academy.
